UChicago Medicine is a recognized leader in patient care and clinical innovation. Since opening the health system’s first hospital in 1927, UChicago Medicine physicians and scientists have shaped modern medicine and advanced the forefront of science and clinical care. The genetic foundations of cancer were discovered here, transforming both scientific knowledge and clinical care. UChicago researchers revolutionized our understanding of insulin, reshaping treatment for diabetes. UChicago Medicine is home to the nation’s first center for clinical medical ethics, pioneering standards that continue to inform how medicine confronts its most profound human questions.
Today, our clinical programs make a significant impact in the lives of patients, families, and our community. We are a destination for patients in need of care for the most challenging, complex conditions, such as organ transplant and neurosurgery. Our bench-to-bedside expertise means we can unlock the causes behind the rarest and most challenging diseases and accelerate new treatments. Through our partnerships across the University and with the communities we serve, we provide expanded and equitable access to advanced care—improving lives in Chicago and around the world.
UChicago Medicine serves as a training ground where students and trainees pursue novel, faculty-mentored investigations, collaborate across the University to design health innovations, and partner with community members to expand healthcare access on the South Side. Our graduates go on to make transformative impact in health and medicine—as research pioneers, care providers, and trainers of future generations of scientific and clinical leaders.
