Thriving Cities and Institutions

Translate economic research and policy expertise into solutions for societies worldwide—spanning local communities, national institutions, and international alliances—advancing prosperity and liberty.

Strengthen communities and civic life

Thriving societies require confronting complex challenges with rigor and imagination. Across the University, scholars, students, and partners are working to deepen understanding of the forces that shape prosperity, trust, and human flourishing, with a focus on the institutions that structure human lives and on the cities where populations are concentrated. This work promises to help strengthen civic life, expand economic opportunity, and improve public systems.

As events in the United States and abroad defy established ideas about institutional structures, robust interdisciplinary work at the University of Chicago is forging a more nuanced approach to institutions. The scholars engaged in these conversations are using varied entrance points, approaching the topic through history, economics, political science, and other fields, enabling them to form a shared language and framework for examining these critical structures.
