Where classic theater speaks to the world we live in now
Winner of the 2022 Regional Theatre Tony Award, Court Theatre reimagines classic theater to illuminate our current times. In residence at the University of Chicago and on Chicago’s historic South Side, we engage our audiences with intimate and provocative experiences that inspire deeper exploration of the enduring questions that confront humanity and connect us as people.
Through productions, new commissions, and collaborations with UChicago faculty and students, Court explores enduring questions about power, justice, identity, and human experience.
Through arts education, community engagement, and new play development, Court extends the University’s culture of inquiry into public life. At a time when democratic dialogue and historical understanding face growing strain, this work is increasingly vital.
Philanthropic support will sustain artistic excellence, deepen educational partnerships, and expand opportunities for emerging artists, ensuring that Court remains a defining force in American theater.
PRIORITIES
Your giving can support the following areas:
- Student access and experiential learning opportunities to expand subsidized tickets, internships, fellowships, classroom partnerships, and interactive learning experiences for UChicago students
- Dramaturgy and faculty collaboration to sustain the unique partnership between Court Theatre and UChicago faculty through support for dramaturgs, visiting artists, and interdisciplinary teaching initiatives
- Archival preservation and knowledge stewardship to preserve scripts, production records, dramaturgical materials, and other creative artifacts that document the theater’s artistic and intellectual history
- New play development and artistic incubation to help writers, directors, scholars, and artists create daring new work and build the next generation of theatrical classics
- Production development and artistic excellence to support ambitious productions, dramaturgy, design, educational programming, and audience engagement that bring classic works to life for contemporary audiences
- Community engagement and arts education programs to broaden access to theater through student matinees, teacher workshops, learning guides, and public dialogue programs such as Theatre & Thought
